House of the Dragon Season 2 Release Date, Trailer, Cast & Plot

That means one of the best Max shows' second season will debut two months earlier than Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen, seemingly revealed on a January edition of the UK's Zoe Ball Breakfast Show. In the wake of Smith's apparent revelation, HBO told TechRadar it had "nothing to announce" about House of the Dragon 2's rumored release date. Discussing the reasoning behind the shorter second season, Clare Kilner told The Hollywood Reporter that season 2 has “eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour". HBO's Network Chief, Casey Bloys, previously announced that we can expect the new season this summer during press event, with a trailer of the upcoming season being shown to a select few there. This came after the June release window news was announced by JB Perrette – the president of global streaming and games at the studio – at a media conference Q&A, although an exact premiere date was not given.

House of the Dragon Season 2: Release, Cast & Everything We Know

Following the events of House of the Dragon Season 1 and the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, the world of Westeros is heading for a full-on civil war for the Iron Throne, known by most as the "Dance of the Dragons." Once again reported by Variety, HBO CEO Casey Bloys stated a 2024 release "is a good guess" for House of the Dragon Season 2. However, because Bloys also said the follow-up likely won't be eligible for the 2024 Emmy season, the outlet predicted the series may be back in the Summer - as supported by Deadline.

Readers of Martin’s fictional-history book Fire & Blood know where things are going, but let’s just say we expect lots of green, lots of black, and lots of dragon war. As for specifics of season 2, the final episodes suggest the action will expand beyond the walls of King’s Landing back to familiar territory around Westeros. Showrunner Ryan Condal says the second season will feature five new dragons, which could hint at a specific Fire & Blood plot leading up to the Targaryen civil war. Thus far, the series has been working loosely off author George R.R. Martin’s doorstopper textbook Fire & Blood, a history book of sorts for Westeros and the Targaryens.

The conflict over who has claim to – and will eventually reign on – the Iron Throne burns bright as we head into House of the Dragon season 2, too. Season 1 episode 9 saw Prince Aegon II – Alicent's second born and Rhaenyra’s half-brother – become Westeros' new ruler. However, while there may be two clear sides to the fight, the allegiance of the many key figures and players – in true Martin style – are most certainly blurred. If you’re struggling to remember everyone’s names, we don’t blame you. There’s a lot of characters to keep track of, but when season 2 comes to fruition, we know it’ll all come together nicely.

The first season of "House of the Dragon" essentially served as a prologue to the "Dance of the Dragons." It covers the last 20 years or so of King Viserys I's rule, after he names eldest child Princess Rhaenyra his heir. He keeps to his pledge despite having three sons with second wife Queen Alicent Hightower.

"It's a story of this family that's been rent open by this dispute over who is meant to wear the crown after Viserys passes. The rich tapestry of George R.R. Martin’s 'Fire & Blood' novel is what House of the Dragon's TV adaptation is based on. Given the time jump midway in season 1, it's unclear if we'll see younger versions of characters Rhaenyra and Alicent (and their actors) return in flashback sequences for season 2. However, there are a few faces who won't be back, such as Rhaenyra's second born Lucerys, who was killed by Aemond and his dragon Vhagar in the season 1 finale. HotD season 2 will also be shorter than its forebear, with just eight episodes than its predecessor's 10. Based on its many trailers (we're getting to them now, don't worry), however, it'll be as melodramatic and brutal as season 1 was.

While HBO has yet to confirm the actor lineup for season 2, George R.R. Martin’s source material suggests that future seasons won’t be taking the kind of leaps in time that defined season 1. So expect Matt Smith as Daemon, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Rhaenys, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II, and Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen to all be back and ready to clash. In an announcement today, Max — the streaming service for HBO and the rest of Warner Bros. Discovery — revealed that they're expanding access to Max throughout Europe.

"Right now, we’re writing season two and figuring out, what is the nature of his relationship with Rhaenyra?" Hess said. "There are many interpretations [in George R.R. Martin’s book 'Fire & Blood'] to that." Some new faces will grace the hallways of King's Landing and the battlefields across Westeros. Simon Russell Beale joins the cast as Ser Simon Strong, the Castellan of Harrenhal and great uncle to Lord Larys Strong. Freddie Fox is Ser Gwayne Hightower, son of Otto Hightower and brother to Queen Alicent.

It looks like House of the Dragon is already going the way of Game of Thrones in its later seasons. In March 2023, Deadline reported that Season 2 will run for eight episodes, down a couple from the 10 episodes of Season 1, and HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed the episode count on Nov. 2, 2023. While some may rightfully point toward HBO's parent company Warner Bros.
